While the world has woken up, albeit late, on climate change and global warming, the renewable energy has picked up steam while they try to push the price of Oil and Coal down!
Wind turbines are being erected across the world and they have moved on from on-shore to off shore sites. The average wind turbine size for on-shore installations have gone to over 3MW across the world. Literally, the wind turbine companies have stopped producing smaller turbines that are less than 2.5MW in size. The largest wind turbine on-shore is close to 8 MW at a height of nearly 200m.
The Off-shore turbines on the other hand reach a capacity of over 15 MW and farms reach Gigawatt sizes. The height of the turbines reach as much as 250 metres!
Gulf of Mannar, off the coast of Tamil Nadu is a natural venturi, supporting a huge energy source. India’s first Gigawatt scale offshore wind is taking off right there!
The solar industry, for its part, has announced integrated ‘storage’ with cells running since 2016, is slowly gaining traction. These can also ‘produce power’ in the nights. Then there is this new set of Perovskite Crystals, which are used in lieu of Silicon Crystals, increases the efficiency of power generation from 24% to 32% which would be a phenomenal increase in power generation! But of course, economics is still to catch up and commercial viability, a long way off.
While these are developments in the already under-use renewables, new set of renewables are also expected to break new grounds!
The terra energy, as it is known and introduced by none other than Bill Gates, is literally, energy from waste! Well, the difference is just that it is nuclear. The buried nuclear waste will be burnt to deliver energy for the world. They claim that the existing nuclear waste material in various deserts, could power the world for centuries!
If terra energy can power the world for Centuries, then what would you say about the energy from the clouds? Clouds have more energy than we have coal reserves it seems! They can power not centuries but millenniums, while pushing the carbon totally out of contention.
Charge from the clouds could be tapped and brought to the ground from a balloon. This could be huge when the lightening happens. But that is like a storm! Whereas if the balloon is positioned in the clouds, then the charges are taken away as they are accumulated and brought to the ground for usage. However, storage could be the major challenge there too!
From the dark clouds painted by the climate researchers, innovators have identified rosy pictures that would take this world to the dizzying heights of growth and development.
