Tamil Nadu Embraces Offshore Wind Energy

Muppandal Wind Farm is Located in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, this 1,500 MW farm is the largest offshore wind farm in India. It's made up of several wind farms surrounded by arid lands with high wind speeds. Tamil Nadu is poised to become a pioneer in offshore wind energy in India, with ambitious plans to harness the potential of its coastline. While there are currently no operational offshore wind projects in the state.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has identified seven offshore wind energy blocks off the Tamil Nadu coast with a combined capacity of a whopping 7,215 MW. Tenders for these blocks are expected to be issued soon, paving the way for the development of large-scale offshore wind farms.

Dhanushkodi, located at the southernmost tip of the state, is being touted as the potential "offshore wind energy capital of India." Its deep waters and strong wind speeds make it an ideal location for setting up large-capacity wind turbines.

Renewable Energy Source of Offshore wind farms will generate clean and sustainable energy, helping to reduce India's dependence on fossil fuels and combat climate change. Tamil Nadu has ambitious renewable energy targets, and offshore wind can play a significant role in achieving these goals. The development of offshore wind farms will create new jobs in various sectors, including manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.

Investing in offshore wind will stimulate technological advancements in India's renewable energy sector and position the country as a leader in this field Setting up offshore wind farms is expensive compared to onshore projects. Building and operating offshore wind farms requires specialized technical expertise, which may not be readily available in India. Careful planning and mitigation measures are necessary to minimize the impact of offshore wind farms on marine life and ecosystems.

?

Source File:-?
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/renewables/tenders-for-seven-offshore-wind-energy-blocks-in-tamil-nadu-soon/articleshow/104026742.cms?from=mdr?
https://coe-osw.org/workshop-on-dhanushkodi-national-offshore-wind-test-centre/?
https://energsustainsoc.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13705-019-0232-1?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muppandal_Wind_Farm?
https://mnre.gov.in/off-shore-wind/#:~:text=Initial%20assessment%20by%20NIWE%20within,off%20the%20Tamil%20Nadu%20coast.?
?
