India Opens Bidding for 500 MW Offshore Wind Power Project

In a significant step towards expanding its renewable energy portfolio, India has launched the bidding process for a 500 MW offshore wind power project. Managed by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), this project underscores India's commitment to tapping into offshore wind energy as part of its broader strategy to meet clean energy targets.

India has primarily focused on solar and onshore wind energy, but this marks a substantial move into offshore wind, which holds vast untapped potential along India’s extensive coastlines. Offshore wind offers advantages like higher wind speeds and greater efficiency, which can help India achieve its goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. This project is part of India's push to diversify its renewable energy mix and align with global decarbonization efforts.

The offshore wind sector, still in its nascent stages in India, has garnered increasing interest from both public and private players, with companies looking to capitalize on government initiatives like viability gap funding (VGF) for offshore wind projects. Offshore wind could help India reduce its dependence on conventional energy sources while ensuring energy security in the long term?
