Important Update on New Additional Surcharges by TNERC

Effective 12.12.24, a new order regarding additional surcharges has been issued, impacting all open-access power consumers in the state.

1.      Surcharge Introduction:
TNERC has announced an additional surcharge to be levied on power sourced through open-access arrangements. This move aims to compensate for the underutilisation of the state’s power infrastructure due to open access consumption.

2.      Applicability:
The surcharge will apply to consumers availing power through third-party generation under open access. Specific rates have been detailed in the order, and category based on voltage levels and contract demand.

3.      Rates and Calculation:
The additional surcharge is set at Rs.0.54 per unit and will be reviewed periodically by TNERC. The calculation methodology considers the fixed costs incurred by TNERC for maintaining its network infrastructure.

4.      Billing Changes:
The additional surcharge will be reflected in the monthly electricity bills of open-access consumers starting from 12.12.2024 to 31.03.2025.

We recommend that stakeholders review their consumption patterns and costs accordingly.
