Karnataka Enhances Green Energy Incentives for Data Centres

As an incentivization measure to gain additional data centre investment, the government of Karnataka has lifted restrictions on green power tariff reimbursement. This is likely to make the state the frontrunner for sustainable digital infrastructure development in India.

Before, the state had previously restricted the reimbursement of green power tariffs, which had turned off many large scale investments in data centres. With the removal of the cap, the Karnataka government hopes to incentivize renewable energy deployment which is both economically and ecologically favorable.

Features of the Policy Change:

• Unlimited reimbursements for green tariffs: Data centres can fully receive reimbursements for green power tariffs and lower operational costs.

• Encouragement of renewable energy usage: Promotes the use of solar and wind power as well as other renewable sources in the data centre ecosystem.

• For Karnataka, the policy is an added advantage: Makes the state more attractive to global technology and cloud service providers who are looking for green infrastructure.

• Enhanced alignment with sustainability objectives: Furthers India’s goals of decreasing carbon emissions and working towards a greener economy.

Policy experts are of the opinion that this modification will create a surge in investment from Indians and foreigner’s alike, consolidating the reputation of Karnataka.
